and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Conservation:<\/strong>&nbsp;the Society supports the conservation of the artefacts and buildings at Herculaneum for the benefit of the public now and in the future.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"359\" src=\"https:\/\/www.herculaneum.ox.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Burnt20scrollcompressed.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1075\" style=\"width:387px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.herculaneum.ox.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Burnt20scrollcompressed.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.herculaneum.ox.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Burnt20scrollcompressed-300x215.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>A Herculaneum papyrus charred by the volcano.<br>Greek letters can barely be discerned.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For the story of our foundation, please <a href=\"https:\/\/www.herculaneum.ox.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/The-Founding-of-the-Society.pdf\">follow this link<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Society:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>organises biennial visits to Herculaneum, and many other informative events.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>raises funds to support special projects at Herculaneum such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/ancientgraffiti.org\/Graffiti\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ancient Graffiti Project<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.herculaneum.ox.ac.uk\/index.php\/the-custodians-room-project\/\">Custodian&#8217;s Room Project<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>publishes an annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.herculaneum.ox.ac.uk\/index.php\/newsletters\/\">Newsletter<\/a> and monthly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.herculaneum.ox.ac.uk\/index.php\/subscribe-to-enews\/\">e-bulletins<\/a> about Herculaneum<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>has a strong presence in social media and on the web<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>has a solid membership base<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sponsors schools competitions that encourage critical thinking about the issues facing the site<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>has helped establish the American Friends of Herculaneum Society (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.herculaneumfriends.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">www.herculaneumfriends.org&nbsp;<\/a>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>assisted the University of Kentucky&nbsp;in running the Mellon Foundation \/ Friends of Herculaneum \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/scholars.uky.edu\/en\/projects\/the-digital-restoration-of-herculaneum-papyri-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Digital Restoration of the Herculaneum Papyri Project&nbsp;<\/a>\u2018&nbsp;in Naples<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>provides <a href=\"https:\/\/www.herculaneum.ox.ac.uk\/index.php\/research\/\">bursaries<\/a> for students and scholars working at or on Herculaneum, whether they are papyrologists, archaeologists or historians<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>launched<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UC_yNS_chjrrP6CnnxJA71Xg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> YouTube channel<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>has founded the series&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.herculaneum.ox.ac.uk\/index.php\/sozomena\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"157\">Sozomena<\/a>: Studies in the Recovery of Ancient Texts<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>contributed jury members&nbsp;for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/scrollprize.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vesuvius Challenge<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>collaborates in applications to the Arts and Humanities Research Council for further study on Herculaneum.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This combination of initiatives has established the scholarly credentials of the Society, confirmed its presence as a player in advancing the cause of conservation and demonstrated its capacity to raise public awareness of Herculaneum.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.herculaneum.ox.ac.uk\/index.php\/join\/\">Join&nbsp;us<\/a>&nbsp;today and help us make Herculaneum even better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><sub>On 30 April 2015 the Friends of Herculaneum Society, formerly Registered Charity number 1107134, merged with the incorporated Herculaneum Society (Charity Registration number 1104632; Registered Company number 05153841).
